Project 2: Vinyl Intervention

Installation/Documentation Due 3/10
*see below for details

Art Intervention occurs when an artist interacts with a previously existing artwork, audience, venue or space. Intervention can also refer to art that enters a situation outside the art world, often meant to provoke the public into considering a social or political issue or idea. While we may consider a piece of art to be a creation of something completely and totally new presented in a gallery setting; this idea has been challenged many times throughout the history of art. From the Dadaists found sculptures to today’s legitimization and monetization of Street Art with artists like Banksy.

In this project, we will be using Adobe Illustrator to create vinyl decals.
You will install these decals out in the world somewhere and document them. The pairing of your decal image and the object or location in which you place it should speak to each other; your decal should “activate” the space or object in which you place, to make a passer by reconsider their interaction or the objects’ meaning.

Ideas to consider:
Political message, humor, subverting/anthropomorphizing an object

Student work & SLIDES

Things to consider:
IMAGE: The image you use will need to be turned into outlines, much like a stencil. Keep that in mind as you simplify your image down to a graphic. What information do you need to keep? What information is unimportant? Consider positive and negative space. Keep in mind that you will have to weed your vinyl (remove all negative space by hand). Very small pieces, under an ⅛ inch, may be very difficult to remove or may not cut clearly.
TEXT: Text is vector-based and can be used in this project, but before you add text, consider whether or not your message can be clear with just an image.
COLOR: Your decals can be one of 30+ colors, but only one color. Visit the Digital Fabrication Studio in the basement to see what colors are available. You will choose a color when you drop off your files.
LOCATIONLOCATIONLOCATION: Where will you install this? It is important to note that vinyl can be destructive to drywall and house paint, so if you want to install on a wall, you should get the permission of your landlord or the owner of the building you want to work in. However, vinyl can easily be removed from the following:
○ Glass, Windows, and Mirrors
○ Tile, Sinks, Tubs, Toilets
○ Wood laminate, like you see in IKEA furniture
○ Steel, Aluminum, Metal
*You may NOT install on any non-porous material because it is not easily removed.
(things that are porous are concrete, drywall, fabric...)
Technical Considerations:
● You can NOT put your decals on the following: cars, laptops, phones or the floor at Tyler
● You have an area of 12” x 22” to make your decal (s)
● Your files should be RGB illustrator files.
● Your image should be vector outlines lines only, you will need to carefully clean up your file and make sure you don't have stray anchor points or "invisable shapes"
● The vector outlines should be RGB black (R255 G255 B255).
● The Digital Fabrication Studio is open Monday-Friday, 9-5. You must plan ahead to get them cut in time. Please allow 3-5 hours for this.
● You will not need to pay for this project, but be sure to tell them you are in my class.

Sketches & Brainstorm: Due 2/18
Make a brainstorm post to your blog with ideas for your project and 5 possible sketches. Sketches can be digital, photos or hand drawn, they should show a loose idea for a decal and location.

Project Proposal: Due 2/25
You will have access to this proposal form from 2/18 - 2/25.
*you will need to be signed into your TU email to complete this form.

Proposal Form  must include the following information:

  • Install/Removal Date
  • Project Description
  • Write a brief proposal describing your project in detail, listing materials + how the piece will be installed at the location.
  • Requested Location
  • Sketch Including Location
Draw exactly what you are planning, including the elevation, dimensions of the piece or pieces, how artwork will be hung, and the site in which the project will be shown.
  • Sketch of Vinyl Decal
  • Size of Vinyl Decal

Documentation on Blog: Due 3/10
Documentation of your installed pieces due on your Blog by 5:30 we will critique them as a class.

Grading Rubric:
Content 40 Points
- Engagement with the overall concept of vinyl intervention, was the subject well thought out
- How thought out is the intervention: Does the pairing of your decal and the object or location in which you place it speak to each other; does the decal “activate” the space or object in which you place, to make a passer by reconsider their interaction or the objects’ meaning
- Does the documentation give the viewer sufficient information to read the work as intended
Formal 20 Points
- Ability to create an outlined shape in Adobe Illustrator, does the piece show competent use of Illustrator
